  5.     In the country's first multiparty election since 1968, voters
  6. emphatically rejected founding father Kenneth Kaunda in a
  7. landslide for the opposition. Kaunda, 67, had been President
  8. since Zambia gained independence from Britain in 1964 and led
  9. black Africa against apartheid. But his authoritarian rule and
  10. economic mismanagement led to riots and an aborted coup last
  11. year that forced him to legalize rival parties.

  13.     The new President is Frederick Chiluba, 48, chairman of
  14. the 300,000-member Zambia Congress of Trade Unions. He
  15. campaigned on a platform of democracy and human rights, vowing
  16. to replace the bankrupt socialist economy with a free market.
  17. At election rallies he demanded of supporters, "Are you ready
  18. to sweat for Zambia?" His answer came in the form of 80% of the
  19. votes cast.

  21.     Kaunda's people would have preferred him to step down
  22. gracefully instead of fighting to the bitter end. But Kaunda's
  23. lasting legacy may be the election itself. By accepting the
  24. results of a free, hard-fought contest, he provided a democratic
  25. model for the rest of a continent still dominated by one-party
  26. dictatorships.
